HlSTORY

The following information concerning the Virden City Cemetery was found in the WPA records at Macoupin County Archives, Carlinville, IL. A note at the beginning of these records states "wrote January 16, 1940." In the next few pages I give a description and history of the Virden City Cemetery. The original notes were very detailed and have been edited. Some of the following legal descriptions are also very detailed, but there are a lot of names mentioned that are interesting.   I will list the veterans in this cemetery in future editions of the MCGS Searcher.

The Virden City Cemetery is a large beautiful cemetery covering over 15 acres of land. This cemetery was laid out in 1860 for the benefit of the people of the vicinity of Virden. In its enclosure we find the graves of 142 soldiers, to whom is dedicated a large Soldiers Monument This cemetery was used for burial purposes for 4 years before a Quit Claim deed was made to the land.

The land on the north and east belongs to Mary Baldson; on the west side Russell Rhohner; the south comes to Public Highway. It got its name from the City of Virden who looked after it. In the very beginning of the cemetery, during war times, this cemetery was located near the present land hard road, but in war times, or about the close of the war, it was moved to the present location and most all graves were moved to the present cemetery. Some were left, but at present time are being farmed over and no attention is made to them. There is nobody that knows who they are or any thing about them. It was laid out by the City of Virden about War times (1860).

In 1864, the title to the land for the Virden City Cemetery was transferred to the trustees of the cemetery and reads as follows: THIS INDENTURE, made this 11* day of January, 1864 between Calvin P. Heaton and Margaret, his wife of the County of Macoupin and State of Illinois, parties of the first part and Drange B. Heaton, President; Jonathan Plowman, Treasurer and Secretary; J. H. Henderson, J. M. Bronaugh and M. Cheney, directors of the Virden Cemetery of the County of Macoupin and State of Illinois, parties of the second part, WTTNESSETH that the said parties of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of $150.00 to them in hand paid, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged do a lien, release, remise and Quit claim unto the said parties of the second part and to them and their successors in office a certain tract or parcel of land with the appurtenances, lying and being in the County of Macoupin and State of Illinois described as follows, to-wit:

5 acres and 057 hundredths of an acre off the E. 1/2 of the NW. 1/4 of Section 5, T. 12 N. R. 6, West of the Third Principal Meridian,: Commencing at the SW. corner of the above named tract of land running North 20 rods and 17 links; thence East 43 rods and 11 links; thence South 20 rods and 17 links; thence West 43 rods and 11 links to the place of beginning. TO HAVE AND TO HOLD the aforesaid granted premises to the said parties of the second part and their successors in office, to their use and behoof forever for cemetery purposes only. IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF the said parties of the first part have hereunto set their hands and seals the day and year first above written. (This deed is dated January 11, 1864 and was recorded in the office of the Recorder of Deeds for Macoupin County, Illinois on January 18, 1864 in Book "AE" of Deed Records at pages 498 and 499. All addresses Virden, Illinois.

The Virden Cemetery is an association and has no charter. It is supervised by the County Court. The association makes a report to the County Court once a year. The cemetery is operated without any profit, just so it pays expenses. Since 1930 there have not been any assessments on any lots for upkeep, and equipment for the cem. There are some perpetual care lots, but not enough to keep the, cemetery expenses going. It has no good endowment fund. They sell lots and money goes into the cemetery fund and is used for upkeep of the cem. There is a sinking (?) fund for a percent that is kept back to be used for additional purchases of land that might be required for cemetery purpose.

The Virden Cemetery is a public burying grounds and is in good condition, being well taken care of by Mr. John U. Simpton who is the present caretaker and has served for about 2 1/2 years. The land slopes to the north and east giving it good drainage. There are four driveways of bituminous and shale running east and west and four drives of the same material running north and south across the cemetery, 3660 graves have been counted in the cemetery but it is said that there are about 6500, of that number 875 graves need filling in or leveling. Sixty tombstones need resetting and 50 are old and weatherworn and the inscriptions need recutting. A good woven wire fence enclosed this cemetery with the main entrance being on the south side near the east corner. At this point there is a large gate with an arch with the inscription "The Virden Cemetery" is painted in and stands out from afar.  The fence on all sides of this cemetery is stretched very tight, graves are in a perfect line and it is in a No. 1 condition. The appearance of the cem. is outstand and is so well kept, neat and attractive that makes it one of the finest cemeteries in the county.    —Information obtained from Mr. John Simpson, present caretaker.

The cemetery is 65 rods long and 38 rds wide. It drains to the east and it is thoroughly tiled all over the cem. It is located 3/4 mile north of Virden Public Square. Take Route No. 4 north. Then west one mile on a good oiled road to the cemetery. The cemetery is situated on the north side of this oiled road. It is well fenced, a very good fence all around the cemetery. The south side is fenced with a very fine quality of lawn wire fence attached to steel posts. There are three gates leading into the cemetery from this side, one near each end and one near the middle. These gates are all steel, swinging from large hedge posts. The gates over the east side is a very fine and strong and above this gate are two tall steel __ with the inscription "The Virden Cemetery". It can be seen from a long distance and it is a very fine emblem, giving the cemetery a striking appearance.

The west part is new additions and has not very many graves in it at the present time. The caretaker has a nice work shop and tool house, situated in the north east part of the cemetery.

The trees are very near all cedar and evergreen, some very large and some smaller ones, but they are all very fine trees. There are only a half dozen other kinds of trees> mostly elms, also sycamores, paltapas (as is), and mulberries. There are quite a few rose bushes and other shrubbery and there are several trees that need pruning as do quite a few rose bushes and other shrubbery.

The Soldiers' Monument

The Soldiers Monument is situated about the middle of the old cemetery, between the two front gate entrances from the east side of the cemetery. It is in the center of a mound, 50 by 50 feet. It is on a cement base or foundation and it is built very strong and sturdy. On this mound, north and south of the monument are four very beautiful pine dwarf bushes. At the south east and north west corners of the mound are two smaller pine drawfe. There are also four cement corner posts over at each comer of the mound. The stone base is 7 by 7 ft and the very beautifully carved monument is 8 ft. high. On top of the stone monument is a soldier with a bayonet in hand and ready for action. He wears a metal uniform with a sword and full army equipment.

The reading on the south side of the monument;

"Consecrated to the memory of those who offered their lives to maintain the republic. Erected 1902."

On the north side of the memorial is:

"Shiloh - Vicksburg - Nashville - Gettysburg"         1861 -1865

"Manilla - Santiago"        1898

The monument is 120 feet north - from the south boundary fence along Public Highway.

WPA VETERANS CEMETERY PROJECT
VETERANS BURIED IN VIRDEN CITY CEMETERY

Indexed about January - February, 1940

The Macoupin County Archives has in its files, indexes/listings of many veterans buried in numerous Macoupin County cemeteries, WPA workers compiled the indexes during the Depression Era.

The following list of veterans is made up of two sources, a typed list of names and the original work sheets that the WPA workers filled out. The typed sheets have been copied in plain type and the work sheets in bold face type. The instructions stated to check ihese sources: burial plot, cemetery record, death certificate or burial permit, patriotic organization (name), official U. S. Records or other. This information will give you an idea of where to begin. I tried to keep spellings and grammar as it was originally written, although some parts are confusing and some difficult to read; the work sheets, at times, list additional information from the typed sheets and at times one will find a few discrepancies in the different sources.
