Obituary: DEATH CALLS MRS.ANNA GARRELS Mrs. Anna GARRELS,
widow of the late Harm GARRELS, passed away at the St. Francis Hospital
in Litchfield on Wednesday, after a lingering illness of diabetes, at the
age of 69 years, 11 months and 3 days. She is survived by three sons, Louis,
of LeMars, Iowa, and Edward and Herman of Mt.Olive; two daughters, Mrs.
Adele OLDENETTLE of Bunker Hill, and Mrs. Henry SCHUETTE,
south of Mt.Olive; one sister and two brothers. Her husband preceded her
in death in February 1931. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday
afternoon at 1 o'clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry SCHUETTE,
6 miles south of Mt.Olive, and at 2 o'clock at the Zion Lutheran church
in this city, Rev. H. HOFHENKE officiating. Interment will be in
the Mt.Olive cemetery.

Obituary: Harm GARRELS, one
of the well-known citizens of this community, died at his home in this
city Saturday afternoon, at the age of 74 years, 3 months and 16 days.
Harm GARRELS was born at Alton, Ill., Oct. 29,1856, coming to
Mt.Olive with his parents when a child. March 26th 1883 he was united in
marriage to Miss Anna SCHLOMANN, and to this union six children were
born 3 sons and 3 daughters. One daughter, Mrs. Emma HEMANN,
preceded him in death. Until 1918 he resided on a farm a mile south of Mt.Olive,
when he retired from active farming and moved to the city. About three
months ago he became seriously ill and was taken to the Litchfield
hospital, where he underwent several operations, and for a time he seemed to
rally and gain strength, but a few weeks ago he took a turn for the worse, and
he steadily grew weaker until death called him Saturday. He leaves to mourn
his death his wife, 3 sons. Louis of LeMars, Iowa; Edward at home and Herman,
of Mt.Olive; two daughters, Mrs. Adele OLDENETTLE, of Bunker Hill,
and Mrs. Lydia SCHUETTE of Mt.Olive; 12 grandchildren; three sisters,
Mrs. Anna WHITEHOUSE of Litchfield, and Mrs. Trientje ARKEBAUER
and Mrs. Mary HASSHEIDER of Mt.Olive. Funeral services were conducted
at the Zion's Lutheran church, of which he had been a life long and faithful
member, by Rev. HOFHENKE on Tuesday afternoon, and the remains
were laid to rest in the Mt.Olive cemetery.

Obituary: Mrs. Sarah GARST Girard, Sept. 26, 1951 Mrs. Sarah GARST,
of Girard, died at 4:30 AM Wednesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles
COULTAS, of Virden. Mrs. GARST was 95 years old and had been ill for some
time. Mrs. GARST was born Dec. 17, 1855, near Franklin, Morgan County, Illinois, the
daughter of Cullen and Nancy DAUGHERTY GIBSON. As a young woman, Mrs.
GARST moved in a covered wagon to Nebraska. She later moved to Madison, Kansas,
and resided there until 1900. She then returned to Illinois. She was a member of the Girard
Church of Brethren. Survivors are four daughters, Mrs. Florence ANDREW and Mrs.
Stella LANTZ of Madison, Kansas; Mrs. Edith KOHL of Omaha, Nebraska; and
Mrs. Ethel COULTAS of Virden, Illinois; one son John C. GARST of Madison,
Kansas; one sister Mrs. Lizzie STOWE of Springfield, Illinois; two brothers, Henry
GIBSON of Girard, Illinois; and Cullen Q. GIBSON of Springfield, Illinois; 9
grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. Remains are at the Berry Funeral home in
Girard where funeral services will be held at 2 PM Friday.

Obituary: Death of Thos. E. GARY. Died at his home
in this city, Thursday morning about 10 o'clock, Thomas E. GARY,
aged 75 years last March 17th. For many years Mr. GARY has been
afflicted with heart trouble. This morning he went out into the garden
to gather some blackberries but soon returned to the house, saying he felt
very sick. He immediately went to bed, and complained of being cold. Warm
applications were made and he soon revived and seemed better for a short
time. The members of his family felt no particular uneasiness, as he had
been subject to such depressing spells for some years, and after he seemed
to gain his natural warmth returned to their household duties. Soon after
one of his daughters heard his endeavor to call and with his wife rushed
into the room, but he died almost instantly without speaking a word. Mr.
GARY has been for more than 50 years a resident of this county
in Barr Township, and in this city 12 years. He was born in Kentucky, March
17, 1824 and married Miss Sallie A. RIVES, March 8, 1848. Of this
union eight children were born-one, Chas. E. died when about five years
old. Seven with the mother survive to mourn his death. They are Mrs. G.
W. HOLLIDAY, Golden City, Mo., Dr. James F., Delhi, Ill., William
A., Chesterfield, Ill, Henry H. and Elmer E., near Greenfield in Barr Township.
Elizabeth Ann and Etta are at home.

Obituary: Andrew P. GATES, son of Henry and Sally (JENKINS)
GATES, was born in Muhlenberg Co, KY, on the 9th of May, 1847, died at the
home of his daughter, Mrs. Daisy KATES, about three miles north of Womac
at 12:30 o'clock AM Tuesday, Feb. 1, 1927, aged at time of death, 79 years,
8 months, 22 days. In September, 1854, he came with his father's family
to Illinois of which state he has since been a righteous citizen. About
two years ago he suffered a paralytic stroke and has been in failing health
since. On Monday morning preceding his death, accompanied by his wife
and son, Ernest, and daughter Daisy of near Womac, he left his home in
Honey Point for Girard to consult a physician and as he was returning home
suffered the second stroke and passed away at the home of his daughter. He
accepted Christ as his Savior and united with the Shaws Point Baptist church a
number of years ago. He was united in marriage to Maria(h) CLARK. To
this union, four children were born, Frank of Oregon; Ada May RHODES
of Oklahoma; and Susie and Cora, the latter two dying when quite young.
His (first) wife died in Dec 1880. In August 1882, he was again united
in marriage, to Rose (Rosetta Bell RING) and to this union seven
children were born-Mrs. Florence CULP of Litchfield; Mrs. Alta STEAD
and Ernest GATES of McVey; Mrs. Daisy KATES of near Womac;
William GATES of Carlinville; and Charles at home. Six children,
with his wife, are left to mourn his departure. One daughter Nellie preceded
her father in death in July 1912. Besides his wife and children mentioned
he leaves 21 grandchildren, two brothers and one sister- T. M. GATES
of Barnett; J. P. GATES and Mrs. S. S. GROVES of Litchfield,
besides a number of nephews and nieces and a host of friends. Funeral services
were conducted at the Rural Church north of Womac, on Thursday morning
at 10 o'clock, Rev. Frank CROUCH pastor of the Baptist Church at
Gillespie officiating. Interment in the Rural Cemetery. The pallbearers
were Ed CARPENTER, Watson GROVES, Festus CHAPIN,
Chris HARMS, Wm. SCHWERTFEGER and Albert PRICHARD.

Obituary: Lucinda WOOD was born in Madison Co, IL, Dec. 31,
1816, moved with her parents to Sangamon Co, in 1818, and settled near
where Auburn now stands. She was the oldest of a family of twelve children,
consisting of seven sons and five daughters, all of whom have been gathered
home except three brothers and two sisters, well along in years, only waiting
the Master's call. She was raised a Cumberland Presbyterian and made a
profession of religion in October, 1822, but as her children became followers
of the Savior they united with the Baptist Church, and she, feeling that
she wanted to be with them, united with the Sugar Creek Baptist Church
now known as the Auburn Baptist Church and later in life placed her letter
in the Virden Baptist Church of which she lived a consistent member. Jan.
10, 1895, she answered the call to which we all must respond and passed
away quietly, trusting in the precious promises of her Heavenly Father.
She was married to Andrew GATES, formerly of Kentucky, in February
1833, Of this union twelve children were born, seven sons and five daughters.
One son and three daughters survive her, viz: Leander A. GATES
and Catherine A. ORGAN, of Virden, Mary E. BALDWIN, of
Springfield, and Lucinda E. LEUTZ, at present in St. Augustine, FL. The
others, together with her loving husband, have passed on before her to the
other side. Besides the sons and daughters mentioned above, she leaves twelve
grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and a large circle of friends
to mourn her loss.

Obituary: Oscar Henry Cullen GATES, 86, 110 N. Pennsylvania Ave., retired insurance
and loan broker and Roswell resident for 40 years died at 5:45 PM yesterday in the Joel Green
Convalescent Home. Son of Frank GATES, veteran of the War between the States, and
Serilda GIBSON GATES, he was born 18 Mar 1870 in Girard, Illinois. When he was in
his teens he moved to Trinidad, Colorado where his brother Charles went into the building
construction business. In 1916, Mr. GATES came to Roswell and began an insurance
and loan business. His office was in the White Building. Mr. GATES and Jessie
MONTAGUE were married in Roswell in 1939. This was his second marriage. Survivors
are the widow and three of his four sons (all of whom served in the first world war). They are
Cullen C, of Chicago, Edwin, of Milwaukee, and Rietman C., of Wood, Wisconsin. Wayne another
son died in 1933. Sisters are Mrs. Emma GARDNER of Girard, Illinois, and Mrs. Lois
GATES TROVER of Carlinville, Illinois, and his brother Edgar GATES of
Springfield, Illinois. Funeral services will be at 9 AM, Saturday in Ballard Chapel. Services will be
conducted by Dr. Austin H DILLON, First Methodist Minister. Burial will be at South
Park Cemetery.

Obituary: Died December 30, 1895 (Notice, of which was given in
last week's paper, of the death of Mrs. Sallie GATES is here
extended in form of a brief biographical sketch.) Sallie GATES, whose
girlhood name was JENKINS, was born in Muhlenburg County, KY, March 4,
1817. She died December 30, 1895, aged 78 years, 9 months, 26 days. She was
united in marriage to Henry GATES, Feb. 28, 1834. Of this union eleven
children were born, seven sons and four daughters, all living to years
of maturity. The family circle was first broken by the father's death on
January 5, 1873. Later two sons and two daughters preceded her to the grave.
About 1857, through a series of meetings held in the neighborhood, mother
and four of the youngest children joined the Shaw's Point Baptist Church,
and have lived consistent Christian lives since, or until taken away. The
mother, formally while living in Sangamon County, held her membership in
the Dunkard or Brethren Church. A number of years ago she broke up housekeeping
and has since been living with her children, seeking to be most with those
whom she could assist in sickness or distress, always kind, loving, and
unassuming. Just at the time when her fatal sickness came on she was with
her widowed daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lee GATES, at Barnett, helping
her to tack comforts and seemed to be in her usual good health until about
3 o'clock PM, when she complained of a dizziness and pain in her head.
She laid down and soon became unconscious. A doctor was at once dispatched
for but did not arrive in time to see her alive, she having died in less
than two hours from first complaining. Truly a good woman, mother and an
old settler has passed away having emigrated to this state as early as
1855. Funeral services and burial occurred at Rural church, conducted by
Rev. Deteric (DEADRICK), of Carlinville, attended by a large concourse
of sympathizing friends and relatives. "Sleep, mother, sleep; your life's work is
done; earth is past and heaven won."

Obituary: Funeral services for Serilda Jane GATES, who died Tuesday, February 13,
1940, at Girard, were held at 2 PM Thursday from the Brethren Church, that city, with
Rev. CASLOW, Virden, assisted by Rev. Dearhoff of the Home, officiating. The
deceased was the great-great-aunt of Lynn Elbert BERRY,
who assisted his father, C. E. BERRY, in
conducting the last rites. Interment was made in the Girard City cemetery, with six
neighbors acting as pallbearers. Mrs. GATES was the oldest of 12 children born to
the late Rev. Cullen C. GIBSON and his wife, Nancy Jane DAUGHERTY, pioneer
settlers in this part of the state, the father coming from Tennessee in 1829 and the mother from
Louisville, KY, the following year. Serilda GIBSON was born February 24, 1845, in
Youngblood Prairie, near Franklin, Morgan County, Illinois, but as a small child came with
her parents into Macoupin County to make their permanent home. In 1861 she was
married to Frank W. GATES, whose parents also brought their family into Illinois from
Kentucky. She lived her entire 60 years of married life in and near Girard. Her husband
served his country through the duration of the Civil War and she was the oldest Civil War
widow in Macoupin County at the time of her death. If she had lived until the 24th of
February she would have been 95 years of age. In 1901 she and her husband retired from
farming and came to Girard, and after his death in 1923 she made her home with her
several children. She made several trips to California to visit her daughter, Mrs. Nora
HARSHBARGER; spent a year in Denver with her son Charles M. GATES, an architech;
and made shorter visits with her oldest daughter, Mrs. Sara FORTNER in Sulphur
Springs, Ark. She spent many summers here in Carlinville with her youngest daughter,
Mrs. Lois TROVER and family, endearing herself to the friends she made while here.
Mrs. GATES lived a long, happy and useful Christian life and from early girlhood was a
devoted member of the Brethren Church, or Dunkards, as they were called in the early
days. In 1905 her father, Rev. Cullen C. GIBSON founded the Brethren Home in
Girard, where Mrs. GATES was devotedly cared for the last 18 months of her life.
One son, Charles M. GATES of Denver, Colo., and one daughter, Mrs. Ella McCann, Bird
Township, preceded their mother in death. Surviving are the four daughters, Mrs. Sara
FORTNER, Sulphur Spring, Ark; Mrs. Emma GARDNER, Girard, Illinois;
Mrs. Nora HARSHBARGER, LaVerne, Calif; and Mrs. Lois TROVER, Carlinville;
two sons, Oscar C. GATES, Roswell, NM and Edgar F. GATES, of Springfield,
Illinois.. She leaves 24 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. Of the GIBSON
family of 12 there are 6 surviving Mrs. GATES: three sisters, Mrs. Hanna
WIRT, Virden; Mrs. Sarah GARST,
Girard, and Mrs. Lizzie STOWE, Springfield, and three brothers, George and Henry
GIBSON, Girard, and Cullen Q. GIBSON of Springfield. Somewhere tonight
among the hills of heaven, She'll walk with all God's stars around her. And we who lost her
here on earth, grow happy knowing God has found her.

Obituary: Joe GAY, 68, of Benld, died at 10 am. Sunday. June 2 at
the Benld Hotel where he made his home. Mr. GAY, a native of Italy,
was a retired miner and was a member of Local 1, Progressive Miners
of America union. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Margaret
BAGGIO of Wilsonville. Funeral services were conducted at 2 pm
Tuesday, June 4 from the Union Funeral Home in Benld and burial was
in Benld City Cemetery.

Obituary: James Gebest, 81, Dead at Mt. Olive. James GEBEST, 81,
former Mt. Olive resident, died at the Macoupin county farm at Carlinville this
morning at 12:30 o'clock. Mr. GEBEST was born in Indiana on
Jan. 21, 1862. For a number of years he was employed by the Consolidated Coal
company at mine 15 at Mt. Olive. He was also a member of the Mt. Olive
band. Surviving him are a daughter, Mrs. Margaret PASLEY of
New York City, a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Frank GEBEST of
Estherville, Iowa and a granddaughter. The body was removed to
the Becker & Sons funeral home at Mt. Olive where funeral
arrangements will be made upon the arrival of the daughter from New York City.

Obituary: Gertrube B. KEPLINGER, was born Nov. 13, 1875 near
Modesto, Ill., and died July 21, 1907 at the home of her brother near Palmyra.
She was married to Thomas E. GEE, Sept. 10, 1896. One child, Grace
Lorene, was given to them to bless their union. She was converted in early
youth and united with the M. E. church, living an exemplary Christian life,
and died with hope in Christ and love for his people. She held her membership
in the M. E. church at Palmyra when death called her. Her husband only
preceded her four months ago, both have battled for some time past with
that dread disease consumption. Two trips to Colorado and one to Arizona
were made in search of health; but the husband was brought back to be laid
to rest. Again Mrs. GEE with her mother, who was an untiring companion,
made a trip to Colorado, hoping this congenial climate would baffle the disease.
Finding her strength fast leaving her, she returned to the home
of her brother, Ed. KEPLINGER, from whose residence God saw fit
to take her home on Sunday evening just as the day was closing. Her day
closed on earth to open in that bright heavenly home, where life is one
constant day. Mrs. GEE was a patient, though intense sufferer, and
all that loving hands could do was done for her. She leaves to mourn her
loss a loving mother, one sister and two brothers, besides her little six
year old daughter, together with a host of relatives and friends. She will
live long in the hearts of her loved ones and her good deeds will not go
unrewarded. The funeral exercises of the subject of the above Obituary were conducted
at Vancil Temple Tuesday, July 23d at 1:30 p.m. by V. E.
KING, assisted by Rev. A. V. BABBA. A large concourse of
people were present, and the deepest sympathy manifested for the bereaved
family. The interment took place in the Pulliam cemetery, the beautiful
burial service being read in a way to impress all hearts with its solemnity.

Chesterfield, MO, on Thursday, June 7, 2018 at 3:50 am. She was born January 11,
1952, in Alton, IL and raised in Bunker Hill, IL. She was the daughter of Edward
GIRTH & Dorothy (COOPER) GIRTH. She married Harvey
"Butch" GEER on December 31,
1980 in St. Louis, MO. He preceded her in death after 29 years of marriage
living in St. Ann, MO. She worked for SIUE for 18 years. For the past 20 years,
she was involved in genealogy helping family and friends search their family
history. Deborah was a graduate of Bunker Hill High School and a graduate of
SIUE where she received her degree in music. Deborah had taught piano to
numerous students in Bunker Hill. She was a member of the St. Michael's Catholic
Church and she was treasurer for St. Michael's Women's Council. She was also a
member of the Bunker Hill Historical Society and Bunker Hill Alumni. She is
survived by her mother, Dorothy GIRTH of Bunker Hill, IL, sisters, Candice
GIRTH of Wildwood, MO, Cynthia GIRTH of Wildwood, MO, aunt, Nora
GIRTH of Wood River,
IL, sister in law, Mary SWOPE of St. Charles, MO, brothers in law, Bill (Sherry)
GEER of St. Louis, MO, Charles (Angie) GEER of Granite City, IL, numerous
cousins, nieces and nephews. Deborah was preceded in death by her spouse,
father, grandparents, Edward and Carrie GIRTH, John and Bertha COOPER.
Friends may call on Sunday, June 10, 2018 at Kravanya Funeral Home in Bunker Hill from
1:00 pm until 4:00 pm. Funeral mass will be Monday, June 11, 2018 at 10:00 AM at

officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Bunker Hill, IL. Memorials

Obituary: For the second time within the space of a month death
visited the home of Henry GEHNER, Jr., one of the prosperous and
best known farmers of this vicinity, residing about two miles north of
this city, for on Monday, Rosina, the second oldest daughter, was called
away by the angel of death, after a lingering illness of tuberculosis,
at the age of 23 years. Her older sister died about a month ago, and the
family has the sincere sympathy of all in this their second bereavement
in so short a time. Death pays no heed to age or station, and no matter
how strong the desire to live, or how dear life may be, when the summons
comes, the young must answer as well as the old, and the spirit return
to Him who gave it. The funeral service were conducted on Wednesday afternoon
at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, where Rev. BRODERS rendered a
touching sermon, the large church being crowded by sympathizing friends of the
family.

Obituary: Shrouded in Mystery. Max GEORGE, a former resident
of the vicinity of Staunton died on Thursday morning at Carlinville. It
is not known at what time his death occurred or what was the cause of it.
He retired about 12 o'clock Wednesday night seemingly in his usual health
and about 6 o'clock the next morning he was found dead in bed. The coroner
was notified and an inquest held. After the inquest was held the body was
prepared for burial and shipped to this city via the interburban, arriving
at 8 o'clock Thursday night. The remains were taken to the home of Paul
GROSS, and uncle of the deceased. Mr. GEORGE was aged 29
years 2 months and 11 days. He leaves a mother, father, three sisters and
three brothers to mourn his sad death and they have the sympathy of all
in their bereavement. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. HUGO
on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence of Mr. GROSS
to the St. Paul's Church. The remains were interred in the city cemetery.

citizen of Mt.Olive died in the hospital in Spalding, Ill., last week.
He had been an invalid for several years, the immediate cause of his death
being consuption. Deceased was a member in good standing of the Mt.Olive
Camp of the Modern Woodmen of America.

Obituary: Charles C. GIBSON died at his home in the northwest part of this city
Wednesday evening, Nov. 12, 1913 of Bright's disease. Mr. GIBSON was born
near Franklin, Morgan Co, IL, July 3, 1850, and was aged 63 years 4 months
and 2 days. At the age of 14 years he moved with his parents to Girard,
where he spent the greater portion of his life. He resided about nine years
near Auburn. Mr. GIBSON married Miss Susan NEHER of Virden,
Dec. 22, 1870. To this union were born ten children of whom two died in
childhood. The eight surviving are Mrs. Clara SHULL of Virden, Elmer
A. GIBSON of Girard, Frank W. GIBSON of Springfield, NM,
Calvin O. GIBSON of South English, IA, Mrs. Ora MOTE of Clarksville,
MI, Ora GIBSON in school at Mt. Morris, and Irvin and Miss Ada residing
at home in this city. Beside the eight children and the widow he is also
survived by his father, Cullen C. GIBSON, aged 90 years, five brothers

W. GATES all of this city and Mrs. Mary GIBSON of Des Moines,
IA who is the surviving widow of his brother James. The funeral services
will be held at the Church of the Brethren in this city Friday afternoon
at 1:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Isaac J. HARSHBARGER.
Interment will be made in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Obituary: James William GIBSON was born near Franklin, Morgan
Co, IL, January 9, 1847; died at the home of his oldest child, Mrs. S.
B. MILLER , in Des Moines, Iowa, July 9, 1900, at the age of 53
years and 6 months. He was the second of a family of fourteen children,
all of whom survive him, except two sisters. His early life was spent with
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. GIBSON, in Morgan County, IL.
At about the age of 18 he came to Macoupin County, IL, where he has lived
since that time. On the 27th day of February, 1868, he was married to Mary
M. WRIGHT. To this union seven children have been born, all of whom
survive the father except the second child, a daughter who died in infancy.
In their early married life both of them united with the German Baptist
Church of which they have been faithful members ever since. In the early
spring he was effected with pains in the left side of his head, but bore
it uncomplainingly until some time in May, when he sought the help of Dr.
A. E. PRINCE, in Springfield. He remained in PRINCE's
sanitarium twelve days, but found only temporary relief. After coming from there
he remained at home a little over three weeks. On Monday, June 25, he went
to Iowa to try ostoepathic treatment. These treatments seemed to relieve
him and yet they seemed to hasten the lurking disease. Since Sunday, July
1, he was delirious. On Saturday, July 7, he was seized with spinal meningitis
and was unconscious up to the time of his death which occurred July 9, 1900.
Services were held at the home of Bro. S. B. MILLER, July 10, and
5 o'clock by Bro. R. H. TAYLOR, also at Girard the 11th, by Rev.
J. H. BRUBAKER and I. J. HARSHBARGER.

Obituary: Mrs. Mary GIESELMAN of East Alton died at St. Joseph's
hospital last evening at six-ten o'clock following an operation which she
underwent at three in the afternoon. Mrs. GIESELMAN was ill for
the past ten days, suffering from stomach trouble. She was the wife of
William GIESELMAN and is survived by her husband and one son,
Genlus. For the past six years she had resided on East Main street in East
Alton and during her residence there made many friends. She was a kind,
charitable woman and was ever ready to help in times of illness and trouble in the
homes of her friends. Had she lived until tomorrow Mrs. GIESELMAN
would have been 49 years of age. She was born in Lebanon, Ill., her maiden
name being Mary BOHLEN. When aa small child she moved with her
parents to Mt.Olive and spent her life, until six years ago, in that place. She
was married in Mt.Olive 27 years ago. She was the mother of three children,
two of whom, Leatha and Virgil Faye, died in infancy. She also leaves a
niece, Mrs. George REIKEN of East Alton, whom she raised, and five
brothers, O.E. BOHLEN of East Alton, John of Iowa, Albert, Henry
and J.E. of Mt.Olive. The body was taken to Mt.Olive this morning and the
funeral will be held from the Mt.Olive Methodist church Sunday afternoon,
although the exact time has not been set. Mrs. GIESELMAN was an
officer of the Bethalto Chapter of the Eastern Stars and the women of the
organization will be in charge of the services at the grave side.

Obituary: Wm.GIESELMAN of East Alton Dies. East Alton, Jan.9 -
William GIESELMAN,69, was found dead in an outbuilding at his home, 121
Main street, at 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Death was attributed to heart
failure. Residing at the home of his son, Genlis, Mr. GEISELMAN
shortly before dinner had left the home. As he walked out his daughter-in-law
had reminded him that supper would be ready in a short time. Genlis GIESELMAN
was away at the time. With supper prepared, she began looking for her
father-in-law. She sent a boy to the house of a neighbor where he was known
to visit often. Returning to the GIESELMAN house, the boy espied
the aged man in the outbuilding. Neighbors were called to assist in getting
him into the house, but he had expired. GIESELMAN had resided in
East Alton for 17 years. He was born in Christian county Nov. 25, 1863.
He married Mary BOHLEN of Mount Olive 37 years ago and, except
for a year spent in Beebe, Ark., after he had given up his position as
rural mail carrier, lived all his married life there until he came to East
Alton. Mrs. GIESELMAN died 10 years ago. The body was taken to Mount
Olive today and funeral services will be held there Tuesday afternoon.

11-3-1913 Thomas Edward GLASS, a respected and aged citizen of this
city, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lyman RICE, on South
Broad street, Sunday afternoon, at fifteen minutes after four o'clock.
He suffered a paralytic stroke about a month ago and had been confined
to his bed since that time. Mr. GLASS was 82 years of age, having
been born in Alton, August 16th, 1831, and moved to this city in 1870,
where he has since resided. His wife died several years ago and he leaves
to mourn his loss, six children, M. F. GLASS, of Hillsboro, G. W.
and T. E. GLASS, Jr., Mrs. John RICE, Mrs. Lyman RICE,
and Mrs. E. L. CARROLL, all of this city. The funeral will be held
from the RICE home, Tuesday afternoon, at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. D.
P. DEADRICK officiating.

Obituary: Mary Jane GLOVER died at her home in Womac, April 28, at
the age of 70 years and 13 days. She was born in Macon county, Tennessee,
April 15, 1841, and came to this state when 12 years of age. She was united
in marriage to Joel JACKSON, September 6, 1860, and to this union
four children were born, four of whom preceded their mother to the tomb.
Her husband and five children survive her, as do also twenty grandchildren
and five great grandchildren, one brother and two sisters. Mrs. GLOVER
was converted and joined the Shaw's Point Baptist church about 32 years
ago, but for many years she was unable to attend religious services on
account of her failing health. She died believing in her Saviour and said
she was going to heaven. The funeral was held at Rural church, Rev. J.
E. JUPLIN officiating, and interment was made in the adjoining
cemetery. The surviving children are: William JACKSON of Barnett,
Mrs. GREY of Womac, Mrs. Lydia WEBER of Litchfield, Mrs.
Pet UPTON of Oklahoma, and Mrs. Maud BURNS of Kansas City.

Obituary: Gottfred GLUR, son of Jacob
and Charlotte WEBER GLUR, was born in Roggwyl, Switzerland,
April 5, 1852, and died at his home in Girard, Illinois, January 1, 1929. He
was united in marriage with Anna MILER August 30, 1878 and with
his wife and three children came to the United States April 19, 1884, settling
in Pittsburg, Laurel County, Kentucky, where he lived until 1911 when he
moved to Girard. Twelve children were born, five of whom, together with
his wife, preceded him in death. He was united in marriage December 16,
1902 to Mary BENARD, four children being born to this union all
of whom survive him. Mr. GLUR had been in ill health for several
years, the end coming following a three-day attack of influenza and asthma.
He leaves his wife, a sister in Switzerland and he following children:

Mrs. Freda MEYER, Ernest GLUR, and Miss Rosa GLUR of

Arnold FREY and Coleman BENARD of Staunton; also many
grandchildren and numerous other relative and friends. Funeral services were held
Thursday afternoon in the Baptist church, conducted by Rev. Milo MOORE.

Obituary: Lady Dies Mrs. Godfrey Succumbs At St. Louis Institution Native
of Worden Claimed After Surgical Operation. Mrs. Libby M. GODFREY, a member
of an old Worden family, and a resident of Staunton for many years died at Barnes Hospital in
St. Louis yesterday following a surgical operation performed last Sat., for a malignant
growth with which she had been ailing for some time. She was the widow of the
late Cornelius GODFREY, former Staunton banker, whose death occurred 2 years ago.
Mrs. GODFREY was born at Worden and observed her 62nd birthday anniversary
on May 1. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Hampton WALL, longtime residents
of the communities mentioned. Mrs. GODFREY spent her life in the place of her birth
and Staunton. After her marriage to Mr. GODFREY she moved to Staunton where
she was active for years in the Order of the Eastern Star, prominent in social circles and a leader
in other affairs of the city. She was the mother of Frank GODFREY of Edwardsville, who
is identified with the Corp. Services Company, and Wall GODFREY, banker at
Wilsonville, a new town that sprang up near Staunton. Two of her brothers, Charles W.
WALL and Wm. P. WALL of St. Louis are retired bankers. Others are:
Hampton WALL, Toledo Ohio; Mrs. Edward CAMPBELL of Bunker Hill, ILL;
Mrs. Alice FERRIS of Laddonia, Mo; Mrs. Lillian M. WOY, of Telluride,
Colorado; Mrs. L.A. MACOMBER, Los Angeles, Calif. Her step-mother, Mrs.
Martha E. WALL lives at Colorado Springs, Colorado. Services will be conducted Friday afternoon,

Obituary: Ruth Helen GOFF, little daughter of Dr. and Mrs.
A.C. GOFF, on Friday morning at 5:50 o'clock passed away at the
St. Francis hospital at Litchfield, after a serious illness of more than
a week's duration. As was reported in our last issue, the little one was
despaerately ill for serveral days and the soothing hand of death came
as a relief. Ruth Helen GOFF was born March 5, 1922 at Sallisaw,
Okla., a daughter of Rev. and Mrs. J.S. WILLBANKS. At the age of
seven months she came to Staunton with her parents where Rev. WILLBANKS
served as pastor of the Presbyterian church. At the age of ten months,
Ruth's mother became ill and at that time Dr. and Mrs. GOFF took
the baby to their home and cared for her. On the following Easter morning
she was baptized in the Presbyterian church by her father. On March 8,
1925, Ruth's mother died, and three days later Dr. and Mrs. GOFF
adopted her. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock
at the Presbyterian church and the number of relatives and friends who
gathered to attend the last sad rites was so large that the church could
not accommodate all who came. Ministers who officiated were Rev. E. N.
GOFF, pastor of the Clifton Heights Presbyterian church and Rev.
Francis Lee GOFF, pastor of the Rock Hill Presbyterian church, both
of St. Louis and Dr. A. M. EELLS of Hillsboro. Hymns were sung by
a quartet comprised of Mesdames A. C. WEBSTER, E. D. GEORGE,
Paul J. LUKER and Irwin MCLAUCHLAN, with Mrs. C. W. F. KING
as piano accompanist. Pallbearers were Harvey STROUD, Roland SAWYER,
Thos. KINNIKIN and Wellman FRANCE. Flower girls were Annette
PREDGEN, Velma MCCRACKEN, Charlotte O'CONNOR, Kate
COOL, Winona O'NEAL, Elizabeth HAMMOND, Geraldine
DEVRIES and Lenice FISCHER. She is survived by her foster
parents, Dr. and Mrs. GOFF; her foster grandmother, Mrs. Mary
BLEY DRIPPS; her great uncle, Dr. D. L. BLEY, who resides with
the family; her father, Rev. J. S. WILLBANKS, and two brothers,
Oscar and Robert WILLBANKS of Wampsville, N.Y.; one half-sister,
Mrs. Harold ROWE of Tulsa, Okla.; one half-brother, Echoles WILLBANKS
of Baltimore, Md.; her grandmother, Mrs. E. WILLBANKS of Heber Springs,
Ark.; her grandfather, N. NOBLE of Cody, Wyo.; an uncle, Gridley
P. WILLBANKS of Newport, Ark, and a host of friends. The officiating
clergyman closed the obituary with these words: So ends her Life's Chapter!
We knew her only to love her and be hallowed by her purity. Her outstanding
graces were her generosity and loving kindness, her obedience and responsive
love, her unselfish thoughtfulness and her queenliness. We are made richer
by those few short years she was with us and can only say, "God's will be done."

Jr, died at Hattiesburg Sunday, at the age of 30 years and 5 months. The
deceased is a daughter of Frank KNES Sr., and wife of this city,
and spent the greater part of her life in Mt.Olive, but at her death was
living at Hattiesburg, Miss., where her husband was engaged in railroad
work. Pneumonia following influenza, caused her death. The remains were
brought to this city, and the funeral services were conducted Thursday
morning at the Holy Trinity Church, V. E. HOPHOOD accompanied the
remains from Hattiesburg, the husband being unable to come, as he also
had the influenza and is just recovering. She is survived by her husband,
three children, her parents and the family and other relatives, and they
have the deep sympathy of all in their bereavement.

Obituary: Ernst E. GRIMM, for over forty years a resident of our community,
died at his home in the south part of town at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, after a illness
of but a few days. Ernest GRIMM was born in Saxony, Germany on December 30,
1860. He spent his early years in the old country, coming to this country some
41 years ago. He was twice married, his first wife being Miss Johanna
HOCHMUTH, who passed away quite a number of years ago. He was later
married to Mrs. Wilhemina HAUSTEIN, who survives. He was the father of 9
children, 2 of whom died in infancy. His funeral will be held tomorrow in the
afternoon from the family home at 1:30 p.m., followed by services at the Zion
Lutheran church, with Rev. J. G. F. KLEINHANS officiating, burial will be at the
Staunton City cemetery. Pall bearers were Chas. F. FRITZ, Martin
HILLER, Paul HAUSTEIN, George GEIGER, Ernest
WEISS and Harry ZUDE. Left to
cherish the memory of Ernest GRIMM are the widow, Mrs. Wilhelmina

Obituary: Mrs. Wilhelmina Augusta GRIMM, aged 74 years, 8 months and 27
days, died Saturday (July 11) morning at 3:30 o'clock at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. Helen GREENE, in St. Louis. She had been in failing
health for some time. Mrs. GRIMM was born in Germany on October 14, 1861.
When quite young she came to this country. At mature age she was united in
marriage with Robert HAUSTEIN of this city, who died a number of
years ago. Later she married Ernest GRIMM, who also preceded her in death
three years ago. For some time past she has made her home with the daughter,
Mrs. GREENE, in St. Louis. The remains were brought to this city to the
Carleton Funeral Cottage, from where the funeral was held Monday afternoon,
services being conducted at the Zion Lutheran church, Rev. J.G F. KLEINHANS
officiating. Interment was in Memorial Park. The venerable lady is survived by
two daughters, Mrs. Robert BOSWELL and Mrs. Helen GREENE of St. Louis;
three sons, Oscar HAUSTEIN of Chicago, Robert HAUSTEIN of Belleville and
William HAUSTEIN of Staunton; four stepdaughters, Mrs. Emma BAUMAN of
Staunton; Misses Frieda and Anna GRIMM of St. Louis, and Mrs. Minnie
HAUSTEIN of Golden City, MO; three stepsons, Paul, Curt and Jack GRIMM
of this city, also other more distant relatives. Mrs. GRIMM, during her long
residence in our city, earned the respect of all who met her. She was a devoted
member of the local Zion Lutheran church. The many friends of the family extend
sincere sympathy.

Obituary: At Rest in Jesus. Aunt Martha
(SNOOK) BATES GRISWOLD,
after arranging to the minutest detail for her funeral, bid her friends
farewell, saying, "It will be over soon," then fell asleep with a pleasant
smile upon her countenance which remained throughout the obsequies indicating
that she was only dreaming of a happy reunion with her loved ones that
had gone before. She was the daughter of Amos and Nancy A SNOOK,
born in Macoupin county, Illinois, May 19, 1841, and died at her home in
Clyde (now called Hornsby), in said county, January 19, 1900, aged 58 years
and 8 months. In June 1857, at the age of 16 years, she joined the Oakland
Baptist church, located one block south from where she died, and remained
an active member in good standing until her death. October 15, 1857, she
was married to Harvy (Harvey) BATES, who died August 1870, from
chronic lung trouble, contracted from exposure in the army during the rebellion.
Six children were born of this union, two sons and four daughters; one
daughter and the two sons died during infancy. While her husband lived, A manly
form at her side she saw, And joy was duty and love was law. Ever after
Uncle Harvey's death, Aunt Martha's feelings are best described in John
20-15. "Jesus sayeth unto her, woman, why weepest thou? Whom seekest thou?
She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, "Christ by faith
has answered her, "In the fair gardens of celestial peace, walketh your
husband in meekness clad;" and "with no fear of storm, or cold or bitter
frost", Like a star that leaves its constellation in the firmament of heaven
to float through endless space, Aunt Martha has left her relatives and
friends to enter the life Elysian, whose portal we call death. She is not
dead. Although from us she has gone, by guardian angels led. Her daughters,
Mrs. Nannie WILLIAMS,
wife of L. M. WILLIAMS, Mrs. Arnetta WILLIAMS, wife of Lewis
WILLIAMS, and Mrs. Mollie WINDSOR, wife of J. A. WINDSOR,
their husbands, four grandchildren, three sisters, one brother, and an
innumerable (unnumerable) host of friends and relatives.

Obituary: Death of Jesse I. GROVE. Jesse I. GROVE
died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Steve YOUNG in Springfield
on Friday afternoon (January 19) at the age of 68 years. He is survived
by one daughter, Mrs. Steve YOUNG of Springfield, and three sons,
Walter GROVES of Indiana, Earl GROVES of Detroit, Mich.,
and Charles GROVES of Springfield. The body was brought to this
city on Sunday afternoon and interment was made in the city cemetery.
Mr. GROVE was for many years a resident of this city and was known
to nearly all the older resident. He was for years a constable in Carlinville.

Obituary: Anna E. GROVES, One of Oldest Residents, Dies Expires
Tuesday at Home of Niece; Rites This Afternoon Miss Anna E. GROVES,
one of the oldest residents of Carlinville, died at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday
at the home of her niece Mrs. Flossie DEADRICK, 617 E. Second South
Street, following an illness of three weeks. At the time of her passing
she was aged 91 years, 1 month and 7 days. Miss GROVES had spent
most of her life in this city, and for many years had resided with her
niece and family. Her home prior to that time adjoined the DEADRICK
residence. To her many friends and everyone in the neighborhood she was
lovingly called "Aunt Ann." She was a woman of high Christian
character, admired by all for her untiring devotion to her loved ones and
loyalty and kindness to her neighbors and friends. She was the last charter
member of the Christian church. Born February 11, 1850 in Shaws Point township,
Miss GROVES was a daughter of the late Sampson and Catherine ARMSTRONG
GROVES. Her father was a native of Kentucky, from which state he moved
to Illinois in 1835, locating in Macoupin County. He learned the carpenter's
trade and upon attaining his majority entered 80 acres of government land.
He cleared and cultivated this, at the same time following his trade, and
subsequently was able to extend his holdings by the purchase of another
80 acres. He was a most skillful mechanic and many of Carlinville's finest
residences and public buildings in the early days were constructed by him.
In 1888 he retired to Carlinville. His wife, who was a native of Virginia,
died in this city March 21, 1896, and he August 26, 1903. Miss GROVES
leaves to mourn her passing one brother, G. Watson GROVES, well
known resident of Shaws Point township who observed his 89th birthday February
15, and several nieces and nephews. The body was removed to the Wiese Funeral
Home, where services will be conducted at 2:00 this (Thursday) afternoon,
with Rev. William GROVES of Springfield, former pastor of the local
Christian church, officiating. Interment will be made in Bethel cemetery.
Selected to serve as pallbearers are Homer WILSON, Bert WILSON,
Jesse BARNET, Truman BARNETT, Leonard GROVES
and George PIERSON.

Obituary: Erma Anna GROVES Litchfield News Herald 6-30-1930,
Monday Miss Erma Anna GROVES, 43, a well known woman of this city,
died Sunday afternoon at 2:35 o clock at the home of her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. S. S. Grove of East Fourth Street, following an extended illness.
She was born in Shaws Point Township, Macoupin Co., April 15, 1887, and
came with her parents to Litchfield when a young girl. Surviving are her
parents, two brothers, Edgar D. of Dallas, Texas; Elvis L. of this city,
and a niece, Mabel Lavonne, also of Litchfield. Funeral services will be
held at the Carroll and Son funeral chapel, Tuesday morning at 10 o clock,
with Rev. S. B. OWING, pastor of the Union Avenue Christian church
officiating. Interment will be made in Elmwood cemetery. The body
will remain at the Carroll funeral home to await the funeral hour.

Obituary: Jacob GROVES, aged 90, a pioneer settler and wealthy retired
farmer, at Virden, of heart failure. He enjoyed the reputation for many
years of being one of the strongest men physically in Macoupin County,
and was a marvel of manhood up to the time of his death.
Obituary: Death of Jacob Groves - Jacob Groves, an old resident of this county, died at his home in Virden Wednesday, aged 90 years. His demise was due to heart trouble. He had been a resident of Virden for the past 25 years. The funeral services were held at Shaw's Point, where he resided for many years before removing to Virden. His wife died about a year ago. By prudence and hard work he had accumulated an estate of considerable value.

Obituary: Sampson Sylvester GROVES, 77, a well known resident of
this community, where he resided his entire life, died Sunday morning at 11:35 o clock at the
residence, 209 East Fourth street. Death followed an illness extending
over the last five weeks from paralysis. He was stricken, May 3, and his
condition since had been serious. Born on a farm in Honey Point township,
west of Litchfield, July 4, 1854, the son of Sampson and Katherine ARMSTRONG
GROVES, he grew to manhood in that vicinity. In 1830 he was united
in marriage with Mary Jane GATES. And to this union were born three
children, a daughter, Miss Erma (or Emma), dying three years ago. Until
moving into Litchfield in 1913. Mr. GROVES had always resided on
the farm in Honey Point Township. After coming to Litchfield he was employed
at the Brown shoe company plant as carpenter, until three years ago. He
joined the Shaws Point Christian church in early life, later transferring
his membership to the Union Avenue Christian church here. Surviving relatives
are his wife, and two sons, Elvis L. of this city, and Edgar D. of Dallas,
Texas. One granddaughter, Mabel LAVONNE, of Litchfield, also survives
with one sister, Miss Anna GROVES of Carlinville and one brother,
Watson GROVES, of Shaws Point. A sister, Emily, of Auburn, and two
brothers Ellis J. GROVES of this city and Fred C. of California,
preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon
at 2:30 o clock at the Union Avenue Christian church, Rev. S. B. OWINGS
will be in charge and burial will be made in Elmwood cemetery. The
body was removed from Carroll s funeral home to the residence this afternoon.

Obituary: Willis R. GROVES Killed By Train. Carlinville Boy
Mangled in Accident at Berdan - Body to be Brought Here. Willis R. GROVES
of Carlinville, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. I. GROVE met death under
the wheels of a C.&A. train at Berdan, a station about mid way between
White Hall and Carrollton Thursday evening about 6 o'clock. No further
particulars of the accident are known here as yet, but the parents of the
young man received the news of his death in a telegram. Willis GROVES
left here on Decoration Day. He said something about going to St. Louis,
but his parents were not sure where he was bound for. They heard nothing
more from him until the message came telling of his sad fate. An inquest
was held over the remains at Roodhouse where the body was taken after the
accident. The body was brought to this city from Roodhouse on the 7:22
train Friday evening and taken to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
J. I. GROVE. The boy was 17 years of age and is survived by his
parents, two brothers and two sisters. Funeral services over the remains
of the late Willis GROVES were held at the family home at 2:30 o'clock
Sunday afternoon, Rev. J. W. PORTER officiating. Appropriate music
was given by a quartet composed of Misses Gertrude GOTTSCHALL and
Sophia SACRE and Messrs. J. B. SEARCY and F. E. GIBSON.
The pallbearers were members of the Christian church Sunday school, as
follows: Hugo MASON, Lynn SEARCY, Fred PLAIN, Glenn
UTT, George PHELPS and Hershel THOMPSON. Among the
mourners from out of town who were present were: Walter GROVES,
of Gas City, Ind.; Mr. and Mrs. Steven YOUNG, of Springfield; Mrs.
Frank GROVE and daughter, of Shipman, John WORMWOOD and wife,
of Girard, J. D. PARKER and wife of Polk township. Interment in
the city cemetery.
