20 - John Henry VAN ARSDALE, aged eighty one years, 10 months, and
3 days died Thursday morning, February 20, at the home of his daughter,
Mrs. Charles ALDERSON in Nilwood township. Mr. VAN ARSDALE,
who was the oldest son of Joseph M. and Lucinda B. VAN ARSDALE,
was born in Bird township, Macoupin County, April 17, 1837. He was united
in marriage April 17, 1862, to Miss Sarah Jane MOORE. They were
the parents of nine children. About fifteen years ago the family came to
Girard, where the death of the wife and mother occurred November 23, 1911.
The surviving children are; Edward E. and Joseph N., both of Girard; Mrs.
D. R. BATTY, of Barnett; Mrs. F. J. MORTON, of Wichita, Kan.;
H. M. VAN ARSDALE, of Los Angeles; George T. of Modesto, Ill.; John
F., of St. Joseph, Mo.; and Mrs. Charles ALDERSON, of Nilwood. The
funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at two o'clock in the First
Baptist church, Girard, conducted by Rev. M. FLORY, of the Brethern
church. Interment will be made in Girard cemetery.

Obituary: Adelia Florence VANCE (HUGHES), daughter of Isaac
N. and Lizzie VANCE, was born near Palmyra, July 3, 1870, and departed
this life January 25, 1927, at the age of 56 years, 6 months and 22 days.
On September 27, 1896, she was united in marriage to James HUGHES,
of Waverly. To this union were born four children, Viola B., Elsie M.,
Lester N. and Dorthy Lucille, the later preceding her mother to the other
world. She leaves to mourn their loss an aged father and step mother, Mr.
and Mrs. Isaac Newton VANCE, and one sister, Mrs. Phebe Viola MESSICK
of Palmyra; a loving husband, three children, two grandchildren and a host
of friends. After giving her life, to Jesus, on May 11 1890, she took the
vows of the church and became a member of the M. E. Church, South, of Waverly.
In her early Christian life she was quite active in church work, and at
one time she was honored by having the office of Epworth League president
bestowed upon her. For fifteen years she has been afflicted, and has been
almost a constant sufferer, which has deprived her from taking an active
part in church work. But almost without a murmur, she was patient to the
end, when Jesus said, "It is enough child come home." We feel
assured that our loss is her gain. Funeral services were held at the M.
E. Church, South, Thursday afternoon, January 27, at 2:00 o'clock in care
of Rev. W.D. HUMPHREY, presiding elder. Music was furnished by Mrs.
L.T. SEALES, Mrs. J.H. SHUTT, O.H. SCRIBNER and W.L.
CARTER. The pall bearers we Howard McKEE, Burt HUGHES,
A.M. HUDSON, Jessie SAMPLES, Wm. PEEBLES, and Johnnie
SIMS. The flowers were cared for by Mrs. Cecil QUINN, Mrs.
Lucien MOORE, Misses Mary QUINN and Frances ALLEN,
Interment was in East Cemetery.

Saint Johns hospital at Springfield. He is survived by
his wife Hettie, three children, Mrs. Ethyl SHEPERDSON of
Springfield, Lester of Palmyra, and Mrs. Edna BAKER St.
Louis Mo. One stepson Holland ROUPE of Pontiac Ill.,
three stepdaughters Ruby BOYD, Modesto, Anne JOHNSON,
Albeuquerque NM., Kezzie CORDER, Alton, six
grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, one great
grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm
Monday at STULTS funeral home in Palmyra with Rev. L. C.
TAYLOR of Virden officiating, burial in Oak Hill
cemetary.

Obituary: Isaac Newton VANCE, third son of Nicholas Penn and
Mary (BREWER) VANCE was born at Palmyra, Illinois, February 9,
1848 and departed this life at his home, November 17, 1931 at
the age of 88 years, 9 months and 8 days. He inlisted in the
Civil War, in Co. E. 122 regiment; Illinois Infantry and served
three years. He was commander of the Chiles Grand Army Post No.
278 at this place for several years, being commander at the time
the Post was disbanded. He was united in marriage to Miss Lizzy
DANLEY; December 3, 1869. To this union three children were born
the oldest son dying in infancy and Mrs. Adelia Florence HUGHES
dying in 1925; Mrs. Phebe Viola MESSICK living in Palmyra. His
wife died in 1906. He was again married to Mrs. Sarah Jane
AURAHAM of Kansas City, Kansas on January 12, 1910. He is one of
a family of twelve children, all with the exception of one
living to be old men and women. He leaves to mourn their loss
his wife, one daughter, 6 grandchildren and six great-
grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Obituary: James Harrison VANCE, son of Nicholas and Mary
VANCE, was born near Palmyra on Nov. 8, 1847, and
departed this life at his home south-east of Palmyra,
Friday, Jan. 17, 1936. At the age of 88 years, 2 months
and 9 days. He was united in marriage to Mary F. PLEYAR,
February 24th 1876. To this union was born two children
Kirwin L. and Ora O. both of Palmyra. His wife died May
8, 1922. He professed faith in Christ at an early age and
united with the Baptist church and remained a faithful
member through life. His life was an open book in the
community and all who knew him found him to be a man of
unselfishness and usefulness. He leaves to mourn his
death, two children, one sister, Mrs. Martha SOLOMON of
Palmyra, five brothers, Milton of Litchfield, Thomas of
Waverly, Edward, Henry and George all of Palmyra. Nine
grandchildren, ten great granchildren and a number of
nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were held at the
home, Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock, Rev. E.L.
FAHNESTOCK officiating. Interment in Oak Hill cemetery.
The hymns were sung by Mrs. O.L. STULTS and Mrs. E.E.
BOWMAN with Mrs. A.E. COOPER accompanist. Casket bearers
were Ray, Ralph and Vernon VANCE, Wilburn WALK, Floyd
JENNINGS, grandsons and Lester VANCE a nephew.

Obituary: Phebe Letitia VANCE Daughter of James H. and Susan MAHAN was born in
Salvisa, Mercer Co., Kentucky, September 30, 1858, departed this life, Wednesday, January
27, 1932, aged 73 years, 4 months and 3 days. When a child she moved with her parents to
Jacksonville, Illinois, coming later to Palmyra where she resided until her death. On
September 30, 1885 she was united in marriage to Richard H. VANCE. She was a devoted
wife and took great pleasure in her home. She professed faith in Christ in early life and
joined the Baptist church, remaining a faithful member until her death. Her conversion was
deep, clear and satisfying and was ever afterwards an event she delighted to recall. She was
greatly afflicted for many years and always she bore her affliction with marked courage,
showing and unmistakable Christian spirit. Hers was a life full of kindness, love and patience
which endeared her to all who were privileged to meet her. She leaves to mourn their loss,
her faithful husband Richard VANCE, one brother William B. MAHAN, Springfield,
Illinois; six sisters, Mrs. T. J. CRUMP, Bellingham, Washington; Mrs. C. L. STEWART,
Alice, Mary and Myrtle MAHAN and Mrs. Etna MORRELL all of Palmyra, Illinois. Casket
Bearers were E. R. BRAMLEY, O. A. ROBINSON, J. A. BROWN, John HALL, Roe
TALKINGTON and George ARRAS. The funeral was held from the home, Saturday at 2:00
o clock p.m., Rev. E. L. FAHNESTOCK officiating with Rev. E. C. ANDERSON assisting.
The music was furnished by a quartette, Mrs. H. A. COLEMAN, Mrs. A. J. SMITH, Joseph
WATERS and George ARRAS. Interment was made in Oak Hill cemetery. Out of town
relatives and friends present were: W. B. MAHAN, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph COPP, Springfield;
Mr. And Mrs. Alison SHIPLEY, daughter Marie, son Harold; Mrs. Chas. BARROW and
son, Alton; Ed VANCE, Mr. And Mrs. Harold KING, Mrs. MCDONALD and daughter,
Granite City; Thomas VANCE, Virden; John TOSH, Waverly.
Cards of thanks. We wish to extend out sincere thanks to friends and neighbors for the
service and kindness shown us in our recent bereavement. Especially we thank the quartette

Obituary: Richard H. VANCE. Richard H. VANCE son of Nicholas and Mary VANCE was
born near Palmyra April 22, 1850. Most of his life was been spent in this community. While
still a young man he confessed Christ and became a member of the Baptist church, then
known at the Buchanan church, later he transferred his membership to the Baptist church in
Palmyra of which church he remained a member throughout his life. September 30, 1885 he
was united in marriage with Phoebe L. MAHAN, who preceded his in death having passed
away January 27, 1932. He departed this life April 6, 1932 at the age of 81 years 11 months
and 14 days. He leaves to mourn his departure six brothers, Milton VANCE of Litchfield,
James VANCE of Palmyra, Thomas VANCE of Waverly, Henry VANCE of Palmyra,
Edward VANCE of Granite City and George VANCE of Palmyra and one sister Mrs. Mattie
SOLOMON of Palmyra also a large number of other relatives and friends. The funeral was
held Friday afternoon at 2 p. m. from the Baptist church. His favorite nephew, Rev. Amos
VANCE of Madison, Wisconsin officiating. Burial in Oak Hill cemetery. The casket bearers
were Arch HUMPHREY, J. A. BROWN, Eugene STANDEFER, John BRANAN, G. W.
ARRAS and J. M. OWENS. The favorite hymns were sung by Mrs. Minnie SMITH, Mrs.
Eugene COOPER, S. O. ROBERTSON and Frank ANDREWS, Mrs. Harry BROWN,
organist. Out of town relatives were Mr. And Mrs. Lester HUGHES of Waverly, Ed VANCE
and daughter, Mrs. Harold KING of Granite City, Rev. Amos VANCE Madison, Wis.

Obituary: Thomas J. VANCE, Wood River, Dies WOOD RIVER, May 13, 1943 Thomas J. VANCE, 86, of
Wood River, formerly of Waverly, died Wednesday afternoon at St. Joseph's Hospital, where he had been a
patient for three days. VANCE was born Oct. 11, 1856 at Palmyra. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs Rosa
ZAPF, 79 East Penning, with whom he lived; two sons, Newton of Springfield and Walter of Virden; two
brothers George and Edward of Palmyra; seven grand children and three great grandchildren. The body is at
the Streeper funeral home here. Funeral rises will be cunducted at 2p.m. Friday at the Baptist Church at
Virden. Services at the funeral home will be at 10a.m.

Obituary: Antonio VANOSDALE, aged 37 years, occupation loader, married, leaves a widow
and five children, all of whom are dependents, was injured at 1:20 p.m. November 4, 1896 in room
12 of the fourth north back entry on the east side of mine No. 10 of the Consolidated Coal Company,
of St. Louis, at Mount Olive, Macoupin county. he had fired a shot in coal that had been under cut
with a machine. The shot failed to bring down the coal. He was loosening it with a pick when the
coal fell striking him on the body and inflicting such injuries that he died four days afterward.

Tony SPAULDING whom we reported as having been injured while at work in No. 10 mine on Wednesday
of last week, died at his home in this city Sunday morning. Mr. SPAULDING'S wounds were more
serious than was at first supposed, the debris having crushed his body about the bowels, hips and groin
to the extent that when reaction took place fatal results followed. The funeral took place Tuesday
afternoon under the auspices of the A. O. U. W. lodge of which he was a member, Rev BUELTEMAN
offering the ministerial services. Deceased leaves a wife and five children to mourn his demise.
He was insured in the A. O. U. W. order for $1,000, which amount will be a boon to his family
who were dependent upon his daily labor for support. Insurance was indeed a blessing in this instance.
"Antonio (Tony) VANOSDALE and Tony SPAULDING were the same person.
He was born June 22, 1858. He died in Mt Olive on November 8, 1896 and was buried in the
Mt. Olive City Cemetery on November 10, 1896. The name SPAULDING came from his mother,
whose second husband had the surname of SPAULDING. Why this name was used in his obituary
is open to conjecture.".

Obituary: Mrs. Sarah VANOSDALE died at O'Fallon, where she was staying, on Wednesday,
aged 46 years, 3 months and 7 days. The remains were brought to this city and the funeral services
were conducted Friday afternoon at 1:30 at the home of her son, Lyman VANOSDALE, and at
2 o'clock at the English M.E. Church. "Wife of Tony VANOSDALE, born December 6, 1860,
died March 13, 1907, buried in Mt Olive, probably next to her husband, though no marker
exists with her name."

Obituary: Wm. VANWINKLE, son of John and Louvisa VANWINKLE
was born August 23,1846 in Morgan county, near Waverly and departed this
life November 8, 1925, at his home in Virden, at the age of 79 years, 2
months, and 16 days. Mr. VANWINKLE was united in marriage September
3, 1875, to Miss Nancy Olive SCRIBNER of Waverly. To their happy
union seven children were born six of whom survive, Bertha dying in infancy,
October 16, 1877 in Wichita, Kansas. Those surviving: Wilmer of Girard;
Welpha, Clyde, Eric, Charles all of Springfield and Dot of Virden. Two
brothers Richard of Virden; Simpson of Farmersville; seventeen grandchildren
and a host of friends. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon
at the Baptist church with Rev. BELTON of Waverly officiating.
Interment in the Virden cemetery.

Obituary: Bunker Hill Man Killed Taking his morning walk, as he
had done each morning since he removed to East St. Louis from his old home
in Bunker Hill, last October, James D. VERNON, 68 years old, a retired
contracting carpenter, yesterday was run down and almost instantly killed
within a few feet of his home by a Southern Railway switch engine. VERNON,
who is deaf, started out from the home of his son Edward VERNON,
of No. 114 Highland place, with whom he lived, about 7 o'clock for his
promenade, as he called it. He was crossing the tracks at Fourteenth street
when struck. VERNON did not see the locomotive, and because of his
deafness, did not hear the bell, the sharp, shrill blasts of the whistle
nor the warning cries uttered by half a dozen pedestrians. Mr. VERNON
was born at Bunker Hill January 19, 1843, and lived there until last
October, when he went to East St. Louis. Besides his son, Mr. VERNON
is survived by another son and daughter, Archie VERNON of Milwaukee
and Mrs. Cora GALBRAITH of No. 3616 Russell avenue, St. Louis.
