An Explanation of Format and Terms Used
by
Linda R.F. Arnold

This is an extraction of PERSONS AND THEIR ENTRIES pertaining to my own family. In some instances, I have extracted all those within a given Section of a Township because it appeared to me that these were neighbors closely connected to my own families--many by marriage.
Where there are no entries for a township, it appeared to me they did not pertain to my family. "My family" to which I refer are: LAIR, CRAYS & TOSH and Allied Families. I also extracted entries of some other Macoupin County Families, which may or may not be related to my families.
The format I used when extracting the information from the microfilm, is in the same manner in which they appear in the record. ie:
William Herrin CRAYSE of Macoupin County, IL
E.H. NW1/4 Sec. 31 T9N R7W 64/100 acres March 10, 1835.
This shows: William Herrin CRAYSE was of Macoupin Co., IL when he entered (purchased) land in the East Half of the North-West Quarter of Section No. 31 in Township 9 North, Range 7 West with a total of 81 64/100 acres on March 10, 1835.
In some instances, the abbreviation for " East half" is given as E.H. or EH which is the same as E1/2. Also, please know that the county and township names are not given in the original record; one must know the township and range numbers that pertain to any given county.
In most cases, the full names of the individuals were given. Until I found the entries for William Herrin CRAYSE in these records, we didn't know his middle name. Some researchers of this family had wrongly guessed at his middle name. Unfortunately, most of my LAIR men did not give full names at the time they entered their lands.
These records are invaluable to the family researcher in that the Federal Land Entries may be the only record in which the full name appears. In most cases, the county land deeds do not give full names.
An Index to Names follows the entries by
Township.
