BARR'S STORE (Macoupin). PO est. 9 Aug 1950; ch. to Barr 30 Jan 1895.
Barr's Store was located in Sections 8 and 9 of Barr Township. Barr's Store was named for Benjamin Barr and the post office was established 9 Aug 1850. It was changed to Barr.
In 1875, the town of Barr's Store had a mill, the Post Office, a Methodist Church, IOOF Hall, a physician and surgeon, 18 assorted sized town lots, a main street named Broadway, another street, an alley. School #2 was about a mile and half northwest of the town. Thomas J. FINLEY, Justice of the Peace contributed by Jill Adami
"On November 17, 1857, Thomas J. Finley of Macoupin Co., Barr Precinct, was commissioned Justice of the Peace. (Executive Record of 1856-1860, Vol. 7, p. 203.)"
Thomas J. FINLEY b. 1816 in KY was a Macoupin Co. resident for decades. He m. Leah B. Rees(e) in 1841 in Macoupin and raised a family there until 1866 when he moved to Barton Co., MO.
