State Level Marriage Certificate Requests
IRAD is cheap if you can find the marriage record there and don't need the marriage certificate. Ten cents each. Minimum is $1.00 so get 10 copies or copies of otherd or same certs.
For records 1829-1877 the records are sufficient because they only have basic info on the certificate such as names, date, marriage performed by, under age consents.
Certificates after 1877 contain all the information about the bride and groom.

What is on a marriage record for different years.

University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS)/Illinois Regional Archives Depository (IRAD) has a list of marriage record types and what they have on them:

  • Marriage Certificates  are given to the couple after the ceremony is completed. these are usually identical copies of the license.
  • Marriage Record/Registers Before 1877  usually contain the names of the marriage bride and groom, date of license, where the couple lived, by whom the marriage was performed and the date of the marriage return.
  • Marriage Record/Registers After 1877 may include the name of the bride and groom parents names, including mothers' maiden names, number of marriages for the bride and groom, where they were born, age at next birthday, where they are living, occupation, race, names of witnesses, and where the ceremony was performed.
  • Marriage License Applications usually contain the names of the marriage couple, date of the license, where the couple lived, and their ages. Later applications may contain the couple's occupations and parents' names.
  • Marriage Licenses Before 1877 usually contain the names of the couple, the date of the license, the name of the county clerk, the name of the person who performed the ceremony, and where it was performed.
  • Marriage Licenses After 1877 usually contain the additional information of occupation, parents' names, where the bride and groom were born, and where they were living.
  • Marriage Index only contains the name of the bride and groom and a Volume and page number.

Local Level Requests for Divorce Information
Contact the Circuit Clerk's Office, giving approximate year and the names of the two parties.  The requester should provide information on whether copies of every page are being requested, or just the complaint and the final order for the actual divorce.
