C. J. C. Fischer, M. D., a prominent physician and
surgeon of Carlinville, Macoupin County, has been engaged in practice in
this city throughout his professional career. He was born in Madison County,
Illinois, January 28, 1854, and is a son of John J. and Catherine (Furch)
Fischer, both natives of Germany.
Dr. Fischer was educated in the
common schools of his native county and pursued a higher course of study
under private tutorage. Having decided to enter upon a professional career,
he read medicine under the direction of Dr. A. M. Powell for a period of
five years, then entered the St. Louis Medical College, from which
institution he was graduated in 1877, with the degree of M. D. He
immediately thereafter opened an office in Carlinville, where he has
practiced with uninterrupted success to the present time. He has taken
several post-graduate courses of study, and is abreast of the great
advancement made in medical science in recent years. He has evidenced his
skill and ability in many complicated cases, and enjoys the confidence and
respect of his fellow citizens to a marked degree. He is a member of the
Illinois State Medical Society, and the American Medical Association and
lias been president of the Macoupin County Medical Society.
Dr.
Fischer was united in the holy bonds of wedlock with Sopha Schuricht, a
native of Missouri, and they are the parents of three children, namely: C.
Eleanor; Elfriede and Otilie. Politically, the Doctor is prominent in the
Democratic party, and a number of times has been called to office. He served
in the City Council, was mayor of Carlinville, and during President
Cleveland's administration was a member of the board of pension examiners.
