Some Facts About the Underground Railroad in Illinois, which has a Macoupin County memory on page 11
- "Later, perhaps in '57, or thereabouts, one Smith, a colored man, was
taking severai fugitives in a wagon with a white cover, a little east of
Chesterfield, 30 miles or more N.W. of Alton, when a group of men, armed,
ordered him to halt, that they might search his wagon. He turned out into
the prairie toward an open grove, with thick hazle [sic] bush around it, &
drove on full run, till the harness reins were shot off close to his hands,
& the horses ran into the brush, & all the darkies got out & hid & were not
found. The pursuers caught the tired horses, & brought them to the house of
Dea. Josiah Whipple, & were about to tie them there, when the Deacon forbade
them, & frightened them by telling them they were liable to arrest as
horse-thieves! The hunters did not catch the Slaves, nor Identify Smith."
