William Yowell, County Superintendent of Highways, was born in Polk
township, November 15, 1882. He comes from one of the pioneer families
of that community and is a son of the late William and Sarah (Price)
Yowell. He attended the district school and worked on the farm until
arriving at young manhood when he went to farming for himself. He was
industrious and was considered one of the coming men of his township. In
politics Mr. Yowell is a Democrat. The people of Polk have honored him
with numerous positions of trust and responsibility.
He served
as town clerk from 1912 to 1914. In 1925 he was elected a member of the
Board of Supervisors, serving two years with distinction, to himself and
credit to his constituents. In the second year of office he was honored
by being elected chairman of the Board, discharging the difficult duties
of that important office in a manner which won for him the respect of
all of the members of the Board, regardless of their political
affiliations. The Board of Supervisors appointed Mr. Yowell to the
position of County Superintendent of Highways in June of 1927. His
efficiency and thorough knowledge of the duties of that office caused
him to again be appointed in September of 1933.
October 28,
1909, Mr. Yowell was united in marriage with Fay Thompson, of Polk. To
their union three daughters were born, Hazel, Claribel and Anita. Mrs.
Yowell died January 1, 1920. February 12, 1922, Mr. Yowell was united in
marriage with Aletha Curtis, of Chesterfield. One son, William Junior,
was born to them.
Mr. Yowell and his interesting family are
residents of the Second Ward of Carlinville. He takes pardonable pride
in the fact that the land in section 14, in Polk, settled by his father
in 1860, is still in possession of the family. It consists of three
hundred and four acres.
