Deaths

The physicians of this county are negligent about making returns of births and deaths. The law requires a return be made within thirty days, under a penalty of ten dollars. But it is frequently several months after a birth or death before the attending physician reports the same to the county."

Although deaths were recorded by 1878, there was no law to record deaths until 1916 so if the death record is not here, it may not have been recorded, or your ancestor may have died in another county or even another state. Many of the aged lived with children in their last years and the children may have lived in another county or state. If the death was recorded, it was recorded in the county and state in which the person died.
