MIEHER, one of the best known citizens in this city and community, died on Saturday evening, at 9:30 o'clock at his home four miles north of Carlinville, aged 74 years. He had been a sufferer from asthma for many years and his death was caused by a sudden attack of that disease. Up to Saturday afternoon he had made no complaint of feeling ill and the attack which resulted in his death was, therefore, unexpected. Mr. MIEHER was known to every body in this vicinity as "Captain" MIEHER. He was born in Hanover, Germany Sept. 13, 1837, and came to America in 1853, settling in vicinity of Carlinville. In 1861 he enlisted in the regular army joining the Fifth Artillery, Company D, under command of Captain Charles GIBBONS. Mr. MIEHER was united in marriage August 26, 1866, to Miss Mary DORIANUS who was a native of Germany. To this union six children were born, as follows: Wm. C. and A. G. MIEHER, of St. Louis; Mrs. R. SOLOMON, of Brooklyn, N.Y., Geo J. MIEHER, Mrs. Charles WIESE and Miss Amelia MIEHER, of Carlinville. His wife passed away several years ago. In politics Mr. MIEHER was a Republican and had served on the board of supervisors from his township. He was a man who had strong beliefs and had a host of strong and steadfast friends. Whatever position he held, he was always found on the side of right and justice, doing his full duty as he saw it. His death will be sincerely deplored by a large circle of friends who know and appreciate his worth. Surviving him are his children above named and Christ, Charles and Henry MIEHER, brothers, and Mrs. P. W. LORENZ, and Mrs. Christ KASTEN, sisters. All reside in this city and vicinity. Deceased was a charter member of the Modern Woodmen lodge of Carlinville. The funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon from the residence at 1:30 o'clock, Rev. Obituary: John Valentine MILLER entered into his heavenly rest on Friday morning, Jan. 26, 1912 at the ripe age of 90 years and 11 months. He was born in Hessedarmstadt Germany Feb. 26 1821. He came to America in 1945 and settled near Albany New York. The same year he was united in marriage to Anna C. ZAKEL who had come to this country with him. To this union seven children were born, four daughters and three sons. One son and one daughter, wife of Henry MANZELS have passed beyond. In 1850 the family removed to Alton, Ill. where they remained about seven years and then moved to a farm known as the Miller homestead, where they lived many years. About the year 1850 he united with the German Methodist Church at Alton. He was one of the Charter members and assisted in building the first German Methodist Church in Alton. He took a very active part in the work of the church and endeavored to advance Christ's Kingdom through the church according to his abilities and means. Shortly after removing to the farm he assisted in organizing the German Methodist Church at Fosterburg and was one of its Charter members and helped to build the church there. He was obliged to borrow the money to pay his subscription. In a history of the Fosterburg church we find the following "One of the oldest members is Valentine MILLER who is yet among us. Since 1850 he has served the church faithfully as Sunday school superintendent, trustee and class leader." This indicates his interest in the church. But while was endeavoring to do his duty in this respect he did not neglect his ....[can't read] ....many sore trials yet be ? ? God. Him who is willing and does help and often eased the dark clouds to disappear and the light to fall on his pathway. Sept 17, 1871 his wife was removed by death. A number of years he made his home with his son Adolph. The most of the last years he spent at the home of his daughters here, Mrs. Mary HEUER and Mrs. W. C. JACOBY. He leaves the two daughters just mentioned and Mrs. W. R. EDDINGTON, his two sons Henry and Adolph, Nineteen grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, besides other relatives and many friends to mourn his departure.
