Searching for information on William HADLEY who married Diadema MCKINNEY in Madison County on Sept 6, 1830. They had a number of children, and census data conflicts with family data. Who did these children marry? Also looking for information on William OTWELL who married Susan MCKINNEY SHORES on Dec 20, 1825, also in Madison Co. Who were children? Who did they marry? I have other MCKINNEY information in case you need it. Finally, I need a death date and burial location for Catherine Eaves MCKINNEY, who was mother of both Diadema and Susan. Her husband was John McKinney (1760-1843) who died in Macoupin County and is buried in a private cemetary there (but which one?). I suspect that Catherine is also buried in the same location.

FERGUSON, NETTLES posted by Greg Nelson on Wednesday, April 30, 1997
The Macoupin County census for 1830 shows a Mary FERGUSON and two children living next to a George NETTLES and family. My ggg-grandmother, Mary Gregg FERGUSON married a NETTLES (could it be George?)and had a daughter Nancy Ann born October 30, 1833. She later had a son James by this marriage. In 1850, Mary Ann Nettles and children were living in Missouri. The mother and daughter went to Oregon in 1851. Are there any records of a marriage of Mary FERGUSON and George NETTLES about 1833-33? Did George's wife die during that time? Is it possible to obtain names of family members not shown on the census? I would be very grateful for any help with this mystery. God Bless.

BURGDORFF, LANGE, MEYER, REIHER, ROHR posted by Scott Meyer on Thursday, July 31, 1997
I am seeking to exchange information on the MEYER and BURGDORFF families - as well as the related LANGE, REIHER, and ROHR families - in Macoupin County and elsewhere. My great-grandfather, Frank (or Friedrich) MEYER (1836-1901), immigrated to Macoupin County in the 1850s or 1860s from Waale, Braunschweig. According to family legend, he immigrated with two brothers, Conrad and John. I don't have any clues as to the destiny of Conrad and John other than naturalization papers on file in the Macoupin County Courthouse for Conrad and John MAIER. My great-grandmother, Carolina Johannah BURGDORFF (1849-1932), immigrated to Macoupin County from Steinbruck, Hannover with her sister, Anna, in 1868. At least one sibling, Herman, was already living in Macoupin County when Carolina and Anna immigrated, and others (Charles, Frederick, and Hermina) were either already in Illinois or would later immigrate. A biography of Frederick published in a 1911 county history of Macoupin County indicates that, at that time, Charles was living in Peoria (Peoria County), Frederick lived on a farm in Bird Township, and Hermina had married J. Frederick LANGE of Carlinville. Frank MEYER and Carolina BURGDORFF were married in 1868, the same year Carolina immigrated. They had 12 children: Lena (who married John ROHR) (1869-1945), Minnie (1871-1896), Ida (?-?), Frederick (1873-1940), Freda (1875-1910), Emma (1879-?aft1932) (who I think married Henry REIHER), Anna (1881-bef1932), Ferdinand (1883-1969), John (1888-1918), Walter (1891-1981), and Clara (1894-1987). An additional child died in infancy. The family rented a farm north of Carlinville until Frank died in 1901, at which time they moved into Carlinville, where they lived at 128 East Washington Street. Walter was my grandfather. He moved to Jacksonville, Morgan County after World War 1, where he met and married my grandmother, Eva Mae JOHNSON (1899-1989). They lived in Jacksonville for the rest of their lives. I have other details to share about these families, but I've gone on long enough!

MATHES, WALL posted by Cindy Leonard on Friday, August 8, 1997
I'm working on a publication "Murder, Mayhem and Madness in Macoupin". I have one particularly interesting story I'm trying to put together. On Tuesday, Aug. 16, 1898, a man named Otto Mathes shot & killed Hampton W. Wall in Staunton. The newspaper story of that event appears in Vol. 2 of Old Settlers Stories compiled by the Macoupin Co. Gen. Soc. Anyway, I've been trying for several years to find out just who was Otto Mathes & what happened to him. I have checked the court records in Carlinville and the case was "Continued for Alias" (whatever that means) as late as 1920. No one I've talked to thinks Otto was ever found. Anyone out there have any further information? Cindy

NOLAN, NOWLAN, NOWLIN, ROBERTSON, ROBESON, ROBINSON posted by Susan Fortenberry on Wednesday, August 20, 1997
I have found father candidates for my 3 g Grand father: George W. NOLAN, born 1823 (?Ohio?) which has IL connection. I think that George's father or uncle may be: Benet NOWLIN (aka Bennett and NOWLAN/NOLAN etc.). He was boen 1795 in IL to parents: Lewis/Louis NOWLIN and Sarah WHITESIDE. Bennet married Nancy ROBESON, (ROBINSON/ROBERTSON?). He had brothers: James,Samuel,David, Hardin, and Lewis/Louis; sisters: Peggy, Elizabeth, Polly and Sarah. I found IL Land Records that show one or more Benet NOWLIN's purchased land in IL from 1816-1846, in Stephenson , Macoupin and Madison Co.s IL. A Bennet NOWLIN was said to be a miner (of what, I don't know...possibly lead or coal), and one of the first settlers of Green Co. WI where he arrived in ~1834. He purchased land in Dane, Green and Lafayette Co.s, WI untill the late 1840's. A Bennet NOLAN is rumored to have moved to Clayton Co. Iowa between 1850-1870, however , I have no proof of this. This is the thin evidence which leads me to hope that I am on the right track: The married sister of George W. NOLAN's future wife Drusilla BOWMAN, Jane Bowman WELLS {wife of Peter Garfield WELLS}, settled in Green Co.WI ~1838. Catherine M. NOLAN, (a daughter of George and Drusilla) b1846 IN -md C.C. CLEVELAND on 11Apr1865 in Boscobel, Grant Co. WISC.-d 1932 in Spokane, WASH. C. C. CLEVELAND bought land in Dane Co. WI. George W. NOLAN and family moved to Alamakee Co. IA in 1849. This county borders Clayton Co. IA. Any info on Bennet NOWLIN/NOWLAN/NOLAN/NOLAND etc. would be greatly appreciated.

My grandparents, William Kenneth OWENS and F. Louise SMITH were married in Carlinville, Macoupin Co, 23 Jun 1920, both having been from Litchfield, Montgomery Co., IL. I am looking for any additional information concerning them. My grandmother was originally born in 1902 Bond Co. under the name Lucinda RIGGINS but due to the death of her mother was placed into the home of Edward Theadore and Estella HICKMAN SMITH, residence unknown. I believe William Kenneth OWENS was born in E. St. Louis, St. Clair Co., IL in 1902.

Camden Hollow posted by Carolynn Bettis on Wednesday, August 27, 1997
Am interested in locating a place called "Camden Hollow". Some ancestors used to camp at this location. Is it in Jersey County? Perhaps near Camden or if there isn't a town named Camden, is there a Camden Township. Thanks.

BEVILACQUA, FORNERO, PERADOTTI posted by Pat Brooks on Saturday, August 30, 1997
I am a direct descendant of these family names. My father was Elmer John BEVILACQUA (b-Sept. 7, 1918 in Maryville, Madison Co., Ill). He grew up in Collinsville, Ill. along with his brother Clyde, and sisters, Ann, Victoria and Caroline. He attended both Edwardsville and Collinsville High Schools. His parents were Elizabeth (PERADOTTI) and John BEVILACQUA. John's parents were Anna FERO and Claud BEVILACQUA of Turin, Italy. He was born there March 9, 1881. He came to America in 1903 along with his best friend Pete PELLIGRINI. John was a farmer and coal miner in Glen Carbon and later Collinsville, Ill., for the Lumaghi Mines (#2). Elizabeth (BEVILACQUA), Mary (GAUDINO), Emma (MRUALE, MAGGIO), Jennie (BALZRAINE, BROWN, KOCHINSKI) Jack PERADOTTI, Pete PERADOTTI, and Chuck PERADOTTI were the children of Peter & Victoria (FORNERO) PERADOTTI. They were both immigrants from Italy. Peter from Valpergo, Italy in 1882 and Victoria from Cirie, Italy, in 1892. Victoria was the daughter of Angeline and James FORNERO. They all came to this country in the late 1890's along with other members of this family. Joseph, Charles, Modesto, Dominic, Maria, and John FORNERO. Charles moved to Benld, Macoupin Co., while Joseph, Modesto, Maria, Victoria and John all remained in Madison County, Ill. Modesto and his family moved to El Paso, Texas. Do you know of these families? And what can you tell me about these individuals? I am very much interested in learning who they were as people. Any infomation would be most appreciated. Thank you.
