BALDWIN, POTTS, SMITH posted by Marti (Baldwin) Swanson on Tuesday, March 4, 2003
Mary Naomi BALDWIN was my grandfather's sister. She died young, but she's still a member of the family, and I'd like to know about her. Her parents were Francis Marion BALDWIN, originally from Virden, and Amanda Jane SMITH. Amanda had been orphaned in Greene Co in the 1850's, and her brother -in-law, Anthony Parker POTTS, became guardian for Amanda and her sister Julia. The Potts family eventually located in Talkington Twp, Sangamon Co; and Francis and Amanda married in Sangamon Co on 16 Feb 1864. I believe that Mary Naomi was their firstborn, but I know little about her besides her name. My grandfather, Edwin Hale BALDWIN, was born 19 Sept 1867 in Virden. There were no other children. I'd be so grateful if someone could tell me when and where Mary Naomi was born and died and where she is buried. Apparently, she is not in Virden Cemetery, where her grandparents and other Baldwin relatives are buried; nor is she in White Hall with her Smith grandparents. BLACKBURN, MERRITT posted by Georgia Merritt Estes on Monday, December 8, 2003
I am trying to find the parents of my great-grandma, Eleanore Blackburn, who married John S. Merritt in l840. She was born in l8l9 in Indiana, and died in l899 in Iowa. There is a researcher who was telling me about a Blackburn College that he thought was in this county in Illinois. A Reverand Gideon Blackburn (l772 - l838) had a son named Samuel from his first wife, who is about the right age to be Eleanor's father(l803 - l836). We believe that both her father and mother must have died not long after she married, because by the next census we see her younger brothers and sisters shared out among siblings and friends (possibly other kin). This relative of Gideon says that both Gideon and Samuel were "Reverends". Perhaps if that was so, Samuel may have located in Indiana, or even Kentucky. Samuel's wife's name is supposed to be Sarah Glass. Gideon's first wife is Grizell Blackburn. His mother's name was Margaret Richie. Does anyone know of a link between this family and mine. Or any other Blackburn that might fit. I feel quite sure that Eleanor (Nellie) had either a sister named Nancy, or a close cousin named Nancy. In the census, two Merritts married two Blackburns and they were next door neighbors. (Decatur Co. IN.)
