CHANCE, RHOADS posted by Richard Hay on Monday, February 16, 2004
Attention "Rhoads" scholars - I am searching for my great great grandfather's sister and her husband - Jemima Chance Rhoads & John Harrison Rhoads. Want to know when they died and where they are buried. Jemima & John lived on adjoining farms in Shipman Township growing up. They were married in 1872 and had 4 children - Charlotte, John F, Arthur, & Leaness. John Harrison Rhoads was a son of Richard & Hulda Stout Rhoads. John came from a large family and John Harrison had a twin Caroline - they were born in 1844. Jemima was born in 1854. Jemima's siblings were Mary Ann, Ezekiel, Matthew, and Charlotte. 1900 Macoupin County census has John & Jemima living in Shipman township. They owned land in Shipman township. I'm guessing they died between 1900 & 1910. In 1880 they lived in Roundtree Township in Montgomery County. Jemima was daughter of Charles & Elizabeth Darr Chance. John & Jemima's daughter, Charlotte married Cyrus Morris and they lived in Macoupin & Jersey County. Charlotte died about 1945 and her brother, John F. Rhoads was listed as a survivor living in Medford, Oregon.

CRITES posted by Rev. Dewey Leon Everts Jr. on Sunday, April 25, 2004
I am looking for the birth and death dates of two daughters and one son born to James Henry Crites and Lilly Myrtle Crites. Both of the girls are buried in Elmwood Cemetery. Both were purportedly born in Litchfield(this is questionable). All three are born between 1903 and 1908. The boy is named Ross Crites. he is my uncle. The girls are Louise J. Crites, (record says died in infancy, no birth date.) Hazel Blanche Crites was purportedly born April 17, 1904 and died May 20, 1905.(record ?) The are my aunts who died in infancy, says the recorded matter in the Crites History book. All three could have been born in Hillsboro but why then are they interred in Litchfield. The oldest sister, Stella May Crites was born in Coffeen and is buried in Litchfield. I think in the same cemetery with the other two girls. As for Ross Crites, ABSOLUTELY NO RECORDS EXIST FOR HIM ANYWHERE. It is assumed by the researcher that he was born in either 1907 or 1908 in Hillsboro. I am a disabled retired minister on Social Security it would cost me $60 to have this checked in the Hillsboro Courthouse with the possibility of all the above not being accurate and the $60.00 is not refundable. Is there anyone out there who would consider doing it for me. The other 4 children are accounted for.

HARRISON, RAFFERTY, READER, SMITH posted by Don Reader on Monday, July 26, 2004
Seeking contact with descendants of Jeptha and Winifred (Winnie/Winey/Winna)Harrison READER, arrived in Macoupin County, IL from Overton Co., TN about 1830. Jeptha's son Paschal was a JP and State Representative, active in Democratic Party, also known as "Squire" Reader, presumably because of landholdings and JP appointment. Paschal's land transferred to sons G.W. and William D. around 1863, suspect due to arrest by Union authorities for protesting Army recruitment in the County. Paschal was arrested and spent months detained in Old Capitol Prison (Old Brick Capitol Building) in Washington, DC. After war, with reputation tarnished, and bad blood with neighbors, he travelled to Lancaster, TX to visit brother-in-law Joseph Rafferty and scout out possible land purchase to move family there. However, he took sick, died, and was buried there, but his monument is in the READER cemetary in Village of Reader just west of Carlinville. Of his three sons, only G.W. and William D. had children, however G.W. had two sons, Ernest and Irvin, but only Ernest had children, one son, my Dad, E.G. READER. Descendants of William D. READER are our closest READER relatives. I had a short contact with cousin Robert (Bob) READER by e- mail, but then he was non-responsive. He did say he had a brother. I think they live in the Spokane, WA area. I would really like to contact one of them and share family history. Thanks!
