Grand Army of the Republic

Survivors of The Grand Army of the Republic

Through the courtesy of Captain Edgar F. Gates, we have the privilege of again printing a picture on the surviving members of the Grand Army of the Republic.

Those in the picture are: standing – T. A. Ellis, Alfred Wood, Alfred Coe, John Davidson, Marion Campbell. Sitting down – George Stone, A. T. Talley, Frank W. Gates, Joe Coy and Sam Garst.

Last week Captain Gates invited and secured the attendance of every Civil War Veteran residing in this vicinity at the dinner given at his home in honor of his father and the other old heroes. His direct purpose being to again bring them together for a social gathering and secure their group picture for the occasion. In addition to its publication Captain Gates has ordered Mr. Campbell to make eleven large enlargements, which he will present one to each veteran in the group. The Captain feels that these men represent a spirit that is unfortunately dying with them and he is doing everything in his power to awake the Legion to the responsibility which circumstances has shifted from the shoulders of these men to theirs.

[Note: The person listed as Alfred Wood should be listed as James M. Wood.]
